Privacy Policy
We respect the privacy of all individuals and our Privacy Policy is in place to help protect that privacy. This policy addresses activities from our servers. Other sites may have their own policies, which we do not control, and thus are not addressed or controlled by this policy.
Personal Information
We do not collect any personal information about you when you visit our Web site (other than the standard information automatically collected and stored in the Web server's logs) unless you choose to provide it to us.
Specifically, we collect information when you subscribe to our e-mail newsletter, send an e-mail to us, send us feedback, etc. We do not sell your e-mail address, your name, or personal demographic information to any mass marketers or any other organizations. The American Democracy Institute may share information with its successor organizations, if any, or with other like-minded organizations.
Information on Children
The American Democracy Institute website does not ask children 13 or under for any information that can be used to identify the child. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children 13 or under.
Information Collected by Server Logs
If you do nothing during your visit but browse through the Web site, read pages, or download information, we will gather and store certain information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally.
We automatically collect and store only the following information about your visit:
* Your computer's Internet Protocol (IP) address. (An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you go on the Web.)
* The domain from which you access the Internet (for example, aol.com, if you are connecting from an America Online account).
* The Internet address of the Web site, if any, from which you came to our site.
* The date and time you arrived at our site and how long you spent visiting the site.
* The name and version of your computer's operating system and browser: for example, Windows 98/Netscape Navigator 5 (this information is supplied automatically by your computer).
* The pages you visit.
We use this information to help us make the site more useful to visitors - to learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use. Unless it is specifically stated otherwise, no additional information will be collected about you.
When you contribute money online:
When you contribute money online, Federal law requires us to collect your name, address, employer, occupation, and the amount of your contribution. Federal law requires us to report this information to the Internal Revenue Service. From time to time, we may implement policies to voluntarily make these records available to the public. This does not include your credit card number which will not be made public. (Information on protecting your credit card number appears below.)
We also make a note of your telephone number and e-mail address, if you choose to provide them, but you are not required to do so. Doing so helps us because then we can use your telephone number and e-mail address to quickly contact you if follow-up on your contribution is necessary under federal law.
In addition, we may, in accordance with Federal law, exchange our contributor list with successor organizations, and with other like-minded organizations. We will not sell or exchange your credit card information to any other third party under any circumstances.
We may use information provided when you contribute online via our website and contribute by mail to contact you for other purposes or to solicit you for additional contributions.
How We Protect Your Information
Our web site has security measures in place to protect against the loss, misuse, or alteration of the information under our control. Our server is located in a locked, secure environment. When you contribute money online by credit card, we collect your credit card number as well as the information listed above. We will not report or disclose this information to anyone, except where required to process your contribution or if required by law.
When you contribute online, we use a secure server and SSL to protect your credit card number and other personal information during the transmission. SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for secure transmission of private information over the Internet. SSL works by using a private key to encrypt data that are transmitted over the SSL connection. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer browsers support SSL, and web sites use SSL when users transmit confidential information such as credit card numbers. Web pages that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http. SSL uses 128 bit encryption within the United States. For more information on SSL, please visit the Netscape web site: http://home.netscape.com/security/techbriefs/ssl.html
